While initial research is promising, CBD has not been researched enough for the FDA to clearly make any definitive statement regarding the efficacy of various cannabidiols.
Research is the first step.
Initial research is good. The findings from initial research often lead to bigger studies. And bigger studies bring important conclusions.
Initial research helps scientists understand what is known, and helps identify where there are holes in the process that are preventing progress.
It’s all a process.
Since we’re early in that process, it’s important to remember why the legal lines are drawn where they are.
The double-edged sword of the law
Laws are intended to keep us safe. While it’s frustrating to see progress move at a snail’s pace, we still have an obligation to be law-abiding citizens (and law-abiding companies.)
FDA regulations are here to keep consumers safe from snake-oil claims.
One of the most common questions we’re asked is whether or not CBD is safe. In our experience, CBD is safe, but not everything labeled as CBD actually contains CBD.
The FDA regulations are helpful, then, because they include strict regulations to verify components of various items.
Because there’s no CBD regulation, though, companies can claim whatever they want as CBD and sell it as such.
It’s not ethical, but it happens.
So if companies decide to shortcut processes that keep customers safe, CBD gets a bad rap.
And since CBD isn’t regulated (yet) there’s not really anything we can do about it.
