New to the whole CBD thing? Here’s a quick rundown.

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a compound found naturally in cannabis and industrial hemp plants.  Discovered in 1940 Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid and it is one of some 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants and accounts for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. Your body actually naturally produces a form of cannabinoids called endocannabinoids, but we’ll get to that shortly.

Wait, so CBD comes from cannabis, isn’t that illegal?

The United States 2014 Farm Bill legalized the sale of “non-viable hemp material” grown within states participating in the Hemp Pilot Program.  This legislation defined hemp as cannabis containing less than 0.3% of THC delta-9, so long as it is grown within the regulatory framework of the Hemp Pilot Program. The 2018 Farm Bill allowed for interstate commerce of hemp derived products, and delisted CBD derived from hemp as a federally scheduled substance.

If it’s not related to the illegal drug cannabis, what does it even do?

People take CBD in it’s many forms and varieties because they are looking for relief and support for their specific ailments and conditions, as well as a general supplement for their overall wellness. To understand the benefits of CBD, you need to understand what it does in the body.

CBD is a type of compound that belongs to the group of compounds known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids work with a series of receptors in your body known as the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is involved in a lot of important jobs inside your body. These include regulating your immune system, appetite, anxiety levels, mood, sleep schedule, anti-inflammatory response, and more. People take CBD because they want to supplement their endocannabinoid system and all the work it does.

Your body actually makes its own set of cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids. If you’ve ever eaten a large hunk of dark chocolate or experienced a runner’s high, you’ve experienced the work of endocannabinoids. When plants make this type of compound for themselves, they’re called phytocannabinoids. CBD is one of over a hundred of types of phytocannabinoids found in hemp plants.

Cannabidol does not have the same psychoactivity as THC, so you can take CBD for any reason you see fit without having to worry about messing up your daily activities with an unwanted intoxicating high. Just so we are clear we’ll state that again: CBD does not produce the high associated with marijuana.
